The Daily 5 is a student-driven management structure designed to fully engage students in both reading and writing. The five literacy tasks are:
- Read to Self,
- Work on Writing,
- Read to Someone,
- Word Work, and
- Listen to Reading.
In the Fifth Grade, we focus on three of the five tasks: Read-to-Self, Working-on-Writing and Word Work.
The Daily 5 uses the acronym CAFÉ. This stands for the following:
- Comprehension (understanding the decoded words) Students learn new comprehension strategies every week.
- Accuracy (decoding words) Students learn new decoding and word recognition skills.
- Fluency (comprehension plus reading accurately with expression) Students discover the importance of fluency through class read alouds.
- Expand Vocabulary (knowing, finding and using interesting words in both spoken and written language) Students are introduced to a wide variety of age-appropriate vocabulary terms.
